Description

A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.

John Barrymore was the black sheep of America's most illustrious acting family. Celebrated for his charisma and matinee-idol looks, he was, for a while, America's most popular actor. Famous for his stage roles in Richard III and Hamlet, he also made more than fifty films. But alcoholism soon dissipated his talents, and he became known more for his Falstaffian behavior and outrageous high jinks than for his art.

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
During the first half of the twentieth century, John Barrymore was revered for his unparalleled performances in Shakespeare's RICHARD III and HAMLET, among many other notable roles on stage and screen. Playwright William Luce has adapted his acclaimed Broadway play for this audio presentation, and while the writing is top-notch, the performance by Jerry Robbins as John Barrymore is less so. There's too much theatricality in his vocal characterizations, as well as huge dynamic shifts. As an audio presentation, it's overblown, making it difficult to enjoy. Perhaps Luce's BARRYMORE needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, much like John Barrymore himself. M.R.E. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

J. R. Roach, Lulu Marketplace...
I have been a fan of Jerry Robbins and CRT for several years now...Barrymore isn't just one of their finest, but I honestly think it will go down as an audio drama classic...It is indeed one of Mr. Robbins's finest performances...This is an incredibly well-written, witty, touching homage to one of the early 20th century's finest actors...
